The first presents

Like most families I know with young children, the anticipation edge is removed from ours by allowing the kids to pick one gift from the pile and open it on Christmas Eve.

Here’s the scene that just unfolded at the Casa de Awesome.

Sam got some pants and proceeded to wrap them around his head with much glee.

Melissa, the one with the mongo energy, got a sweater of many colors.

Emily, who might be the sweetest girl in the world, was pleased to find a Pediatrician Barbie.

Mandi got a pair of dress boots. No more sandals to church in January!

And Shana got a new dress shirt for work and Jared is wearing a new coat.

Merry Christmas to everyone.

Christmas thoughts from Emily

This morning while I was doing Emily’s hair:

Emily: “Mom, is Santa real?”

Mom: “What do you think?”

Emily: “Yes!  Duh, that was obvious.”

Singin’ Sammy

Thursday was Sam’s little program at his preschool. He’s a little stage nervous and distracted while he tries to find people in the audience, but he’s still our Sam.

That’s him in mid-kiss-blowing motion at the end of the program.

We LOVE his preschool. He’s learned a lot and really grown.

His teacher, Mrs. Davis, has been with him for two years now and he really likes her.

Well, maybe not so strange in their eyes, but in mine — very strange.

I’ll spare you the gory details of the ‘after’ picture.

At least it’s clean.

That Sam I Am

Today Sam and I had a visit with Dr. Hoffman at the Primary Childlen’s Pediatric Ophtalmology Clinic where we reconfirmed what we already knew.

His vision isn’t really getting worse, but it’s not getting better with the corrective lenses and the daily patching.

So, we’ve got him scheduled for surgergy to manipulate the muscles around his right eye and kind of force him to use it more often. This should prevent him from being cross-eyed, but he’ll still need glasses because his vision is 20/125 in the right eye and 20/80 in the left eye. By getting his brain to use both eyes, the hope is they will strengthen and the vision will either get better or at least stay the same and then later on, perhaps, Lasik is an option.

Before anyone freaks out, it’s a minor procedure done thousands of times by this doc.

Sam will be OK.

FHE: Temple Square style

Monday night, the kids and I met Shana downtown for a little sightseeing. It was a fun little Family Not Home Evening.

As usual, only the pretty members of the family are in the picture. We keep the ugly ones hidden.

We have some budding photographers in the family. While downloading photos Shana took, here’s a sampling of what we found on the memory card.

There were, of course, many — MANY — more photos but this is just a snip of what we found.

Aren’t digital cameras nice? Imagine how much film would be wasted if we were still using Kodak.

Christmas Time is Here

Sunday Jared set up the tree, and we all helped decorate it.

Kinsey made cute little sheep for the tree.

Grandma Kinsey had sent us home with supplies to make these cute little gingerbread cookies and decorate them to look like reindeer.  They were delicious.
