Scar face

Sam had a little accident on his bike. Apparently he wanted to go left, the bike wanted to go right and his face took the brunt of the impact.

He split his lip a little bit, splattered some blood all over his face, hands, shirt and pants and he got some bruises on the schnoz. He was almost asleep when I took this picture.

After a good cry and a little nap, he is the same old Sam and wanted to get out and ride his bike again.

The next Anna Kornikova

And I say that because she’s cute, not because she’s a great tennis player. Anna K was known more for her looks than her skill, after all. 😉

Mandi decided she wanted to try out for the Murray High school tennis team. After all, she is a big ninth grader now and has taken about 10 weeks of tennis lessons. So why not try out for the team?

The coach was happy to have her because apparently not a lot of girls have shown interest in the team this year and they graduated a lot of good seniors from last year. The first match was that afternoon!

Coach put her on the court right away in the No. 1 Junior Varsity Doubles match and, in Mandi’s words, “We got creamed.”

She has a few friends on the team — including a girl from our ward (above) who she got partnered with in the first match — and one of her best buddies.

The Spartans might not win a lot of matches this year. Even the Varsity players are kind of not-so-good. But Mandi’s going to have a lot of fun and might get a few road trips to far-away schools like Cottonwood and Olympus.

So, this was kind of Mandi’s ‘welcome to high school’ moment. She’s on a high school sports team.

I’m old.

Look what showed up in chalk on our porch and driveway!

“The Boys” are three kids named Josh, McKay and Jared.

Mandi swears they are ‘just guy friends’ and trying to embarrass her. I’m not so sure the smile she got was one of embarrassment, though.

A big thank you to everyone

Thank you so much, family.

I know I can be a bit of a pill — a very, very large pill — but I was very happy to see everyone together this weekend. It was so nice of you who took charge and made everything happen.

I’m really grateful for you all — especially Alison who kicked some serious butt in the planning department. You rock!

Also, another big thank you to your kids. My little monsters love to see their cousins and getting to hang out with them at the beach, grandma’s house or anywhere else is a special treat for them.

We forgot to pack our camera, but here are a few of the pictures taken and forwarded on to me. They are wonderful.

I truly have the best family in the world — and I’m not talking about just my wife and kids.

Thanks for putting up with me.

In the context of being asked to help put away laundry:

Sam:  “No!  MY job is to eat ice cream!”

Well, maybe not in the world, but this one was mighty pricey.

Someone — I’m guessing one of our little people — dropped a dime into the sink and it went into the disposal. We couldn’t get it unjammed no matter what we tried.

We had a plumber come to fix it, thinking it was just a stubborn jam and I couldn’t get it loose. It was perfectly jammed underneath the teeth of the machine and the bearings and motor of the disposal were fried and the thing was dead.

A few hundred dollars later we have a fancy new disposal and one expensive dime.

Things we need

Sam says, “Hey mom, we don’t have any potato chips or frosting or whipped cream!  So you can take me to the store right now!”

Elvis has left the building

Mandi’s pet lizard, Elvis, is no longer with us.

Let us all pause now, and observe a moment of silence for what was a truly lizardy lizard.

. . .

Carry on.

In the books, kiddos. And no bonking until there were 10 miles left and I had one last 3-mile climb to get into Park City.

Anyone up for a bike trip to Minnetonka Saturday morning?

Here’s a link to the long version of the race recap.
